What is Colour Therapy - by Agnes McCluskey

This article explains what colour therapy is and how it can help your health and wellbeing.

Colour Therapy

Colour Therapy and Healing in its many forms has been used for thousands of years. It was used by many civilizations, including the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Egyptians. Colour surrounds us in our everyday life and has a profound affect on us on many levels - physically, emotionally, mentally and also spiritually. By actively using colour, a colour therapist aims to balance and enhance your energy centres, thus stimulating your body’s own healing process and promoting health, healing and well- being

The Science Bit

Colour is energy and energy surrounds us in our everyday lives. The sun emanates light of different frequencies. When a white light is shone through a prism it breaks down into the seven colours of the spectrum. These colours all travel at varying frequencies and wavelengths. This means that each colour has its own particular energy or vibration. The seven colours are red – orange – yellow – green – blue – inidgo and violet. Violet at one end of the spectrum has the shortest wavelength and red at the other end of the spectrum has the longest wavelength. There are other frequencies such as Ultraviolet and Infra- red rays, but these are not part of the visible spectrum.

Chakras

The Chakra system is a subtle energy system which relates to the seven main energy centres of the body. The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel”. Each of the seven colours of the spectrum links to the seven main chakras in the body. Chakras are like spirals of energy and each one relates to the others. The chakras link to all aspects: – physical – emotional – mental and spiritual and colours affect us on all of these levels.

Colour Therapy/Healing

Colour Therapy can help to re-balance the chakras if a blockage or imbalance has occurred, by applying the appropriate colour to the body, therefore helping to stimulate the body’s own healing system. Colour Therapy and Healing takes many forms and each therapist will work in their own specific way. Colour Therapy/Healing is often compared to speaking a foreign language. Colour Therapists understand the language of colour and the various meanings of the colours and can translate these for you. Indeed, when we think about it, colour is evident in our own everyday language. We have all heard the sayings “feeling blue”, “red with rage” or “in the pink”.

There are various ways a therapist can work with colour = Aurora Borealis Coloured Bottles, Aura drawings, Chakra Balancing. Silk Scarves, Meditation, Light Boxes etc. It can also be combined with other therapies including Sekhem and Reiki.

Colour Life Readings

The Aurora Borealis is a set of 49 pyramid shaped bottles, each containing single or dual colours. The Client will be asked to self-select bottles, both those they are attracted to and also those that they are not attracted to. From the sequence of colours chosen, the therapist can then identify the key issues facing the Client, or anything that may be holding the client back. The aim is to bring clarity to the Client and allow them to move forward and hopefully to obtain greater fulfilment and well-being.

Aura Drawings

The aura is the electro-magnetic field that surrounds every living thing, even though it is invisible to most eyes. It is made up of various colours and is linked to the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual state of an individual. Each of these colours link to physical conditions, psychological characteristics, specific organs in the body and can give a clear indication of how a person is thinking and feeling.

The colour therapist can sense aura colours. Using a piece of paper with a simple body outline as guidance, they may intuitively map out the Aura colours and using their knowledge of colour, then proceed to analyse these.

Colour therapy remains a powerful and positive way of working with people. It can have a profound affect on people and their lives. It can be used as a therapy as outlined above, but it is so easy to bring the soothing or energising power of colour into your life through the clothes you wear, the accessories you have around you and in the colours you can have in your home or work environment. Be uplifted and energised by the red, orange and yellow hues and feel the soothing and relaxing qualities of the green, blues violet and indigo hues. The next time you see a perfect rainbow, stop and look at it and see how wonderful it really is. Take a moment to say thank you for having the chance to see something of such beauty. Colour is there for everyone, all you need to do is take the time to really see it and of course to use it!
